Poster Abstract

NCALD (Neurocalcin delta), HPCA (Hippocalcin) and S100B are neuronal calcium sensor proteins that confer calcium sensitivity to neuronal and non-neuronal cells. Work from other laboratories have established that HPCA is critical in long-term potentiation of memory. We have established the role for S100B in maintenance of the Blood-Brain Barrier: a breach is associated with severe cognitve and neurodegenerative consequences. The poster summarizes (i) the role of HPCA in the movement disorder dystonia; (ii) the potential role of NCALD and S100B in circadian rhythm/sleep disorders; and (iii) preliminary investigations into the potential role for these proteins under inflammatory/aging conditions.
