Poster Abstract
•Complexities of obtaining healthcare access can be difficult for all patients across the board, so much so that it’s viewed as a maze. Studies have shown that these challenges are added on for medically underserved communities.2-3 Some of these challenges include insurance, language barriers, appointment availability, stigma, financial limitations and lack of transportation.2 •Identify the barriers that patients with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) from medically underserved backgrounds face in healthcare access. •Intellectually and developmentally disabled patients from medically underserved communities face exacerbated barriers in healthcare access. •Participating medical providers from the Regional Integrated Special Needs Center (RISN) – Sewell and Rowan Family Medicine – Hammonton will be surveyed/interviewed regarding the barriers their patients with intellectual and developmental disabilities face in healthcare access. •The survey showed that providers find that the barriers their IDD patients encounter most frequently are issues with transportation, insurance and delayed appointments. In addition, almost all providers found that they have to advocate for their patients in regard to medical or public health services. •By pinpointing the barriers that IDD patients coming from underserved backgrounds face, more attention can be brought to this patient population with the goal of improving access.
