Abstract
The growth in online programs has provided increased access for RNs to complete their BSN education. However, access without support and an engaging learning experience for adult online students has resulted in decreased engagement and, in some cases, attrition. Therefore, the purpose of this qualitative single case study was to explore the experiences of engagement of adult RN-to-BSN students in their senior year of an online program. Thirteen adult student participants shared their experiences of online student engagement during semi-structured interviews. Five themes were identified, including the significance of technology, faculty facilitation, connecting to peers through online discussions, navigating group dynamics, and personal approaches to learning. Overall, student-to-instructor, student-to-student, and student-to-content interactions enhanced these adult students’ engagement in the online environment. It was through technology that engagement occurred. Sometimes this engagement posed challenges for the participants, given that the adult students’ diverse access to technology, experiences, and understanding of technology. Amid the online environment, the participants adapted by using unique learning strategies and applied self-regulation and time management skills to balance the competing demands of being an adult student. It is important for nurse educators and leaders to recognize that not all students have the same access to and knowledge of technology. In online learning, technology is the first step in student engagement, and the LMS serves as the central platform for student interaction. As the number of adult part-time students in online programs continues to increase, it is important to have a greater understanding of their online student engagement.
