We often cling to the notion that more stability is needed in our advising practice. After all, advising can be chaotic and unpredictable. However, the elusive nature of stability can be frustrating. What if we embraced uncertainty and constant change instead? How might this enable us to remain attentive to our students? In discussing a frequently misunderstood population in higher education, first-generation college students, we aim to provide a new perspective on the holistic nature of advising. These students face formidable obstacles throughout their undergraduate journeys, often in silence. As advisors, we must adapt and support them through the ever-evolving landscape of their academic and personal experiences. One way we can do this is by introducing the topic of impermanence. Where we can learn to become more present and engaged in our everyday advising meetings.
